Get Your Home Summer-Ready

Writer: Kera DupreeKera Dupree

The season change is fast approaching and while we all love adding things to our already long

to-do lists, some things are worth the necessary effort to avoid bigger problems later on down the line.

And some of those things have to do with making sure ours homes are ready for changes to come. One

of the ways you can prepare your home for summer is to make sure you change the filters in your HVAC

system. Sounds like a pain, but this really helps those who suffer from allergies, asthma and other air-

quality related conditions. If your allergies are severe or you just seek a better quality of air, using a

higher MERV-rated filter increases contaminant filtration leading to smoother breathing. Ideally filters

should be changed every ninety days in most homes without pets; every sixty days if you have one pet

(dog or cat) and every twenty-forty-five days if you have more than one pet. Keep in mind, these are just

averages, and cheaper filters may need to be replaced sooner than mentioned above. A thorough HVAC

inspection and service is recommended annually to ensure you system is running at its optimal

performance.

Inspecting and changing weather stripping on doors and windows is another important item to

add to your summer readiness checklist. Making sure your weather stripping is air-tight can help

eliminate leaks, ultimately reducing energy costs, putting a few extra cents in your pocket. There are

several things you can do to make sure your stripping is still in good condition, and doesn’t need to be

replaced. Feel for drafts coming from around windows or doors that may indicate a poor seal. Perform a

visual inspection to make sure there aren’t any tears, gaps, cracking or peeling in the stripping.

Finally, if you live in more northern areas, checking outside faucets to make sure there hasn’t

been any frost damage and making sure gutters are leaf-free will prepare your home for summer

climates. When checking outside faucets, check to ensure there is adequate water pressure. A loss of

pressure can indicate a broken pipe. These are just a few suggestions to make sure you are able to get

your home summer ready enjoy the long days as comfortably and care-free as possible. If you have any
